Obituary for Vernon Belcher

Vernon Belcher
Vernon Belcher, 99, of Grundy, died Wednesday, June 5, 2019, following an extended illness of dementia.
Born at Harman, Va., December 18, 1919, he was the son of James O. Belcher and Mary Jane Looney Belcher. He resided in Buchanan County his entire life, with the exception of two years he spent in the U.S. Navy as an office recruiter in Williamson, WV.
He graduated from Grundy High School in 1936 as the salutatorian of his class and graduated from Bluefield Business College in 1938. A lifelong learner, he returned to college and in 2000, at the age of 80, graduated with a certificate in Computer Repair with A-Plus Certification from Southwest Virginia Community College.
He was a bookkeeper for Harman Mining Company and later for Rapoca Coal. He also had his own business as a bookkeeper. He was also a coal operator, having started O’Quinn and Belcher Coal Company; Quinner Coal Company and V&O Coal Company in Buchanan County, Va., and Seaboard Fuels in Pikeville, Ky. He also owned Buchanan Coal Testing and continued to operate it until he retired.
He was a member of Grundy Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where he also served as a deacon and a trustee. He was treasurer at the church for more than 40 years. He was a mason in the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge No. 17 AF&AM in Grundy; a shriner in the Kazim Temple in Roanoke; and a member of the Florence Ann Chapter No. 133 Order of the Eastern Star in Grundy, all of which he belonged to for more than 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ersel Belcher and Gladyis Belcher; and three sisters, Algie Ratliff, Eula Blas and Mavis Asbury. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his special niece/daughter, Mary Belcher, of Grundy; Grand Niece, Janey Lamprecht and her husband, Jamey Lamprecht, of Poquoson, Va.; Grand Nephew, Eric Jeremy Belcher and his wife, Malynda Belcher, of Vansant, Va.; and two great-great nieces, Sophia Belcher and Juliet Lamprecht.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 8 at 2 p.m. at Grundy Baptist Church, Grundy with David Peters and Larry Burton officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Military graveside rites will be conducted by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion and Childs-Gentry Post 7360 of the VFW. Pallbearers will be members of Vernon’s Sunday School class.
The family will receive friends Friday, June 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grundy Baptist Church.
